Proven Impact: How Physiotherapy Is Transforming Lives at Turner Home

Just over two years ago, something special began at Turner Home. We partnered with City Rehab, a team of physiotherapists who don’t just treat symptoms, they build relationships, restore confidence, and help people rediscover what their bodies can do.

From the very beginning, City Rehab understood that our residents are more than their care needs. They’re individuals with stories, goals, and a deep desire to stay as independent as possible.

The focus was clear: help residents move better, feel stronger, and reduce the risk of falls,  one of the biggest challenges in any care setting. Falls can take away more than just mobility; they can take away confidence, independence, and peace of mind. But with the right support, that risk can be reduced, and lives can change.

And they did.

Now, with the results of our first program evaluation in hand, we’re proud to share the measurable impact this collaboration has had not just in theory, but in the real, everyday lives of the people we support.

Measurable Gains in Mobility and Balance

The evaluation revealed significant improvements in residents’ physical function. Using standardised physiotherapy assessments, we saw clear progress:

  • The Functional Reach Test (FRT) showed an average improvement of 48%, indicating better balance and stability.

  • The Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test revealed that 20% of residents improved their mobility — a key factor in reducing fall risk.

  • The Romberg Balance Test (RBT) demonstrated enhanced balance across the board, with time improvements ranging from 20% to 150%.

These results reflect not only improved physical ability but also a greater sense of control and independence for our residents.

Resident and Staff Feedback

The numbers were backed up by strong feedback from both residents and staff. Among residents:

  • 87% agreed the program helped reduce their risk of falling.

  • 80% reported improved ability to transfer — such as moving from bed to chair.

  • 78% said they experienced better mood and overall wellbeing.

Staff members' observations closely mirrored these findings:

  • 94% noted improved mobility and transfer ability among residents.

  • 81% observed increased confidence in those participating in the program.

This alignment between clinical data and lived experience highlights the program’s holistic success.

A Collaborative Approach to Care

One of the key strengths of the program has been its collaborative nature. City Rehab didn’t just work with residents they worked alongside our care staff, offering ongoing training and support. This has helped embed physiotherapy principles into daily care routines, creating a safer and more proactive environment for everyone.

This partnership has become a cornerstone of life at Turner Home. It’s helped us create a safer, more supportive environment where residents can thrive, not just survive. And while we’re proud of what’s been achieved, we know there’s more to come.

With continued collaboration, we’re excited to keep moving forward, together, helping every resident live a life that’s not only longer, but fuller, stronger, and more joyful.
